role out of the eighties b

so i leave school
full of plans for music girls n more music
break my arm on the holidays before
so magically avoiding doing my audition for the course
survive first 1/2 of semester
date a lovely girl
get close
breakup
but we're still friends even now
go on a camp
meet another girl
get really close
we go out for a couple o years
she is great
lots of love n
well, you know wot young people do . . .
lots of music besides that
playing my horns during the day
reading the scores and discovering
debussy n saint saens n satie
early music n renaissance stuff
experiment with sackbuts n the like
enjoy being arty farty n
almost being encouraged to do so
start playing on some peoples tapes n cd's
not an easy gig for a young muso

anyway
sure you get the idea
it was fun
sometimes i got paid
sometimes it was for love
sometimes it was all night and i'd meet mates for brekkie n
then fall asleep in my girls bed
life went on
i formed bands
joined bands
did some stuff
played lots around the place
with various levels of success
broke up with girl and got crushed
took ages to get over it
my folks didnt really get it
thought it was just some crush
but it was the real deal
at least
as real as a 19 year old gets to experience
anyway
we are still friends now too
even thought it has taken us 10 years to get connected again
anyway the 80's ended
with me and a mate watching frank zappa and a super funky band
playing late on news years eve 1989
i was still young
bit more battered n bruised
but still full of energy
full of hopeful creativity
n wondering what the 90's
would bring?

so here's where the truth comes out many of you know that I was received into the catholic church nearly 5 years ago now at New Norcia Easter 2002 it was majestic and beautiful the right thing for me in all ways and then... finding a catholic home has been harder than i could have ever thought i love the monks the liturgy the silence the sacramental life the beauty of the worship a noble simplicity but local parishes give me the whoops good liturgy in Perth is hard to find... so i drifted back to my wife's parish whilst i couldn't stand the "worship" the new minister is a good guy accepted me for what i am and needed my help for ideas about the church year and structuring services and taize and all that is good and great and i felt needed and useful but... in that lies the rub. not finding what I need but just putting up with where they need me not being true to my confirmation beliefs especially eucharistically but settling for something else than what i believe

Mad Men 101

Thanks to a conservative blog for peace I have become quite intrigued by with US series “Mad men”. For most Australians this is quite an unknown program, the second series being premiered this Sunday night on specialized broadcaster SBS, leaving us well behind the US which is currently airing the fourth series. For those who don’t know, Mad Men takes place in the early 1960’s, varying its setting between the main characters Advertising office workspace, their homes and social lives. As the series progresses we discover that the characters are not at all what they seem, both outwardly and inwardly, as we journey with them through the historical events and changing social patterns which have influenced so much of our modern culture. It is this historical element which captured me. The ways husbands, wives and children inter-related. The constant smoking and drinking. The more relaxed pace of life. Infidelity and the subsequent risks and consequences. Psycho-analysis just beginning
